Recording Session

Hi folks!  Rest assured, we have been continuing to work on our upcoming CD.  Saturday April 18, Timmy drove over to pick up Jason in the Miata.  It was a beautiful day for drive with the top down.  Only problem was there's no room for a guitar in the 2-seater sports car!  So we had to get creative and strap the ol' Modena on top the back of the car and let 'er rip!

Timmy, Jason and the guitar made it safetly to Harriet's basement (aka Club Laundrie) where we proceeded to lay down the raw tracks for the new disk.  Stay tuned for more information and updates!

Peace, Brothers and Sisters!

"More bands, more venue, more buzz" at this year’s Deutschtown Music Festival

July 12, 2014 will mark the second annual free Deutschtown Music Festival. Building upon the immense success of last year’s event, the full-day festival will showcase more than 80 bands in at least eight outdoor and indoor venues, starting at 11 a.m. and ending late that night. There will be a wide variety of music styles, including jazz, blues, rock, bluegrass, German, and electronic. The daytime portion is designed to be a family-friendly event, with numerous food trucks, a flea market, and other activities to supplement the music. Throughout the day and night, a free shuttle with several stops in the Northside and Northshore will be available to the 3-5,000 people that are expected to attend.

The festival was conceived by neighborhood advocate Cody Walters. When asked about this year’s event, he said, "2,500 people discovered new music and our awesome neighborhood at last year’s festival. This year, we’re expecting double that number. We have more bands, more venues, more buzz. It’ll be a great time, guaranteed."

Participating venues include James Street Gastropub and Speakeasy, Max’s Allegheny Tavern, Artists Image Resource, Bistro Catering Co., Park House, Penn Brewery, Verdetto’s, Allegheny Elks Lodge #339, Peanutz, Key West, Wigle Whiskey Barrel House, and 2 outdoor stages, one on Foreland Street and one in Allegheny Commons Park along Cedar and Suismon Avenues. This year’s performers include 3TG, Charm & Chain, Working Breed, Apostles of Cool, Slim Forsythe & his New Payday Loners, The Turbosonics, Fourth River Revival, Olympus Mons, The Pressure, 28 North, Grand Piano, The Harlan Twins, D.o.B. with Sirkus Days Fire Troop, Roger Harvey and The Wild Life, Household Stories, Sun Ray Shining Light, Meeting of Important People, Brewer’s Row, Crystal Lee Morgan, Devin Moses, Willis Tree, Paul Luc, Micah Nagel, Dan Pritchard, Skye Steele, Nameless in August, Shade, André Costello and The Cool Minors, The Black Six, The FED, Shelf Life, The Hawkeyes, Big Gypsy, Chet Vincent and The Big Bend, Bastard Bearded Irishmen, Faithful Sinners, Dan Getkin and the Masters of American Music, The Mobros, Triggers, The Red Western, Wizard Bomb, Street Pigeons, Josh Hill Band, Paddy the Wanderer, Adadsdad, Don Strange & The Doosh Bears, Yinzide Out, The Wire Riots, City Steps, Neighbours, The Chad Sipes Stereo, Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo, The Wreckids, City Dwelling Nature Seekers, We Came From Space, Misaligned Mind, Weird Paul Rock Band, Mark Strickland Trio, Roger Humphries and RH Factor, Salsamba featuring Kenia, Reggie Watkins, John C. CD Release Party Spotlight in Post Gazette !!!

Some guys start bands to attract girls or fulfill starry visions of fame. But drummer Timmy Klatte is too mature for that -- he founded surf-rock trio The Turbosonics due to an epiphany. "After 20 years of classic rock in clubs, I wanted to try something different," he recalls.
Then he saw Dick Dale at the Rex Theater in 2005. "I had two of his CDs, and as a kid I liked secret agent music and twangy Western guitars, but I didn't appreciate him until he played at full volume. He's credited with inventing surf guitar, but nobody around here was doing this stuff."
Info box 9/7/2012
The Turbosonics/Jason Martinko Revue
With: The Semi-Supervillains.
Where: 31st Street Pub, 3101 Penn Ave., Strip District.
When: 10 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets: $5; 412-391-8334.
So Mr. Klatte mined his friends for the ingredients of a surf trio -- no dice. Next step: Craigslist. He found bassist and ex-Maine resident Keith Caldwell, and completed the trifecta with guitarist Jason Truckenbrod, who moved to Pittsburgh in 1995.
"In Buffalo, my skate-punk band played Husker Dü and Iggy Pop covers," remembers Mr. Truckenbrod, "and D. Boon [of The Minutemen] was my guitar hero along with Billy Gibbons, who's my mother's cousin. So I was used to power trios."
In 2008, the Turbosonics initially sprang to life as the Surf Zombies, playing faithful versions of Dale, Ventures, Surfaris and Link Wray. But original instrumentals leapt from Mr. Truckenbrod's fertile mind, and four years on, they've assembled eight tracks for their self-titled debut. "The Dick Dale influence makes it more aggressive, and my roots in blues and punk [mean] there's that flavor in there, too."
The album was recorded at the McMurray studio of singer-songwriter Tom Breiding, who'd heard the Turbosonics' full force at Moondog's. Hammered out in one day with only two words for lyrics ("Tom and his son Jack helped us yell 'Lights Out!,' " adds Mr. Caldwell), the collection boasts a universal flair. "Surf music is so accessible, you can pair it with punk, garage, rockabilly or blues," explains Mr. Truckenbrod. "We've got three generations -- Keith's in his 30s, I'm in my 40s, Tim's in his 50s -- so it's music that doesn't lose appeal, and we're trying to bring it to today's crowd to keep it relevant."
The band hopes to beguile thousands of World of Wheels attendees at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown, on Saturday afternoon before their 31st Street Pub gig.
