CD Review from Homegrown Rocker - Rocky 104.9 Altoona

The Professor - Jim Price

THE TURBOSONICS – THE TURBOSONICS (AmeriSon Records) There isn’t much premium beach space or ocean surf to be found along Pittsburgh’s three rivers, but rip-roaring surf rock erupts from the Steel City courtesy of The Turbosonics. Formed in 2008, The Turbosonics feature drummer Tim Klatte, bassist Keith Caldwell and guitarist Jason Truckenbrod. Their self-titled disc introduces listeners to The Turbosonics’ instrumental surf-rock realm, featuring eight invigorating creations. The group crafts the surf vibe completely, from driving rhythms to instrumental tones and abundant reverb. Each track captures a different mood and variation on the surf theme; the disc-opener “Clambake” immediately sets the tone for the rest of the album with its authentic California beach/surf rock vibe, and that mood also permeates the rowdy shout-along anthem “Lights Out.” “Black Flamenco” mixes a slight Spanish guitar flourish into the proceedings, and “Man’s Woman” stretches out with a lighter, melodic arrangement. “In the Shadows” toys with darker surf flavors, “Zombie-a-Go-Go” is more playful, and “Dragstrip” and the disc-closer “Hattori Hanzo” rock harder and with more ferocity. The melody lines are simple and to the point, and The Turbosonics improvise enough along the melodies to keep the listener’s attention through each track. Recorded in complete band takes in the same room, this disc shows that The Turbosonics are tight and together, as the three musicians smoothly weave, complement and play off one another. The mix is clear and full, and the overall sound is smooth yet edgy. Even though this music emanates far from any beach, The Turbosonics’ debut is a fun set that honors the tradition of classic surf rock; this CD should be tucked alongside the surf board or body board before embarking on the next beach vacation. (The CD can be obtained through the website turbosonics.blogspot.com.)

Turbosonics CD Review from the Pittsburgh City Paper

The Turbosonics The Turbosonics (Amerison Records)
The point of surf rock is not so much to write songs as it is to shoot around some guitar riffs that encapsulate the rolling waves of the Pacific. The Turbosonics (a surf-rock trio despite being 300 miles from the nearest ocean) manage this well for 32 minutes, rarely slackening from an appropriately rollicking pace. Their all-instrumental, self-entitled studio debut features ... smoldering riffs ...

CD Release Party Spotlight in Post Gazette !!!

Some guys start bands to attract girls or fulfill starry visions of fame. But drummer Timmy Klatte is too mature for that -- he founded surf-rock trio The Turbosonics due to an epiphany. "After 20 years of classic rock in clubs, I wanted to try something different," he recalls.
Then he saw Dick Dale at the Rex Theater in 2005. "I had two of his CDs, and as a kid I liked secret agent music and twangy Western guitars, but I didn't appreciate him until he played at full volume. He's credited with inventing surf guitar, but nobody around here was doing this stuff."

So Mr. Klatte mined his friends for the ingredients of a surf trio -- no dice. Next step: Craigslist. He found bassist and ex-Maine resident Keith Caldwell, and completed the trifecta with guitarist Jason Truckenbrod, who moved to Pittsburgh in 1995.
"In Buffalo, my skate-punk band played Husker Dü and Iggy Pop covers," remembers Mr. Truckenbrod, "and D. Boon [of The Minutemen] was my guitar hero along with Billy Gibbons, who's my mother's cousin. So I was used to power trios."
In 2008, the Turbosonics initially sprang to life as the Surf Zombies, playing faithful versions of Dale, Ventures, Surfaris and Link Wray. But original instrumentals leapt from Mr. Truckenbrod's fertile mind, and four years on, they've assembled eight tracks for their self-titled debut. "The Dick Dale influence makes it more aggressive, and my roots in blues and punk [mean] there's that flavor in there, too."
The album was recorded at the McMurray studio of singer-songwriter Tom Breiding, who'd heard the Turbosonics' full force at Moondog's. Hammered out in one day with only two words for lyrics ("Tom and his son Jack helped us yell 'Lights Out!,' " adds Mr. Caldwell), the collection boasts a universal flair. "Surf music is so accessible, you can pair it with punk, garage, rockabilly or blues," explains Mr. Truckenbrod. "We've got three generations -- Keith's in his 30s, I'm in my 40s, Tim's in his 50s -- so it's music that doesn't lose appeal, and we're trying to bring it to today's crowd to keep it relevant."
The band hopes to beguile thousands of World of Wheels attendees at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown, on Saturday afternoon before their 31st Street Pub gig.
